Last year, Chris Pronger stomped - yes, stomped - on Ryan Kesler's face. The dirty player, glorified by the NHL Network and nearly every hockey pundit out there, received 8 games as a punishment.
It was his 8th time being suspended.
Today, Sean Avery referred to all-around nice guy (is my sarcasm evident online?) Dion Phaneuf's girlfriend as "my sloppy seconds." He was suspended "indefinitely" because of conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey." My guess is it will be a 5-game suspension and he will be fined.
Uh, it's true, isn't it? Kim Bauer went to Phaneuf right after she broke up with Avery. One Canadian hockey player to the next. Sounds like sloppy seconds to me. She went from Avery to Long Island native Mike Komisarek to Phaneuf with barely enough time for a shower.
Here's the full text, said in Canada, where apparently they don't have freedom of speech like the States do...
"I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight."
Suspended indefinitely for speaking his mind and neither cursing nor threatening a player. Apparently, it would have been less dangerous for him to step on someone's face with a skate blade (8 games), or elbow Dean McAmmond's head (1 game) after he was suspended for elbowing Thomas Holmstrom's head from behind (1), or kick Ville Nieminen with his skate (also 1 game), or cross-check Brendan Morrow in the face (2), or swing a stick at Jeremy Roenick's helmet (4 games). Maybe he should have fractured Pat Peake's thyroid cartilige when he swung his stick at his neck (Pronger received 4 games).
Oh, but calling the star of The Girl Next Door sloppy seconds is a heinous act.
Maybe the NHL was too busy reviewing Mike Mottau's vicious hit on Frans Nielsen and the subsequent 2-game suspension to actually hear what Avery heard.
Right On. National Hypocrites League. I didn't want Sean back without Shanny to reign him in but this whole thing is a witch hunt. Avery should sue the Stars and the League for mental and emotional damages.
ReplyDeleteBravo. I can think of a million things worse people have said and done that have gone unpunished. Like when Darcy Tucker said he'd take out Michael Peca, went ahead and did it, and didn't even get a minor penalty. All the Pronger stuff. It's absurd. If anybody not named Sean Avery made that remark, nobody would have cared. But since it was Avery, he must be punished. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteYeah... people on TSN are all calling for Avery to be suspended for a huge amount of time, saying he's ridiculous, and while he probably shouldn't have said it (mostly because Dion Phaneuf is violent and would kill him), who cares? Anyone other than him and it wouldn't be news.
ReplyDeleteJust like when he danced in front of Brodeur. Smyth and Holmstrom play the same way, but Avery does it and there's a rule about it 2 days later.
While I think it's lame that he got suspended, I also think that it was even lamer to basically call a press conference on game day to make this little announcement.
ReplyDeleteHad he said this in a general interview, I doubt there would have been an issue. The fact that he did it before a game was just so transparent.
He also has a history of low-blows. Do I think it's suspension worthy? Probably not but there's a difference to being a prick on the ice than to using the personal lives and misfortunes of others to try to throw of their game.
Incidentally, I'm no fan of Elisha's (went to high school with her) so I'm not even close to defending her. It is sloppy seconds, obviously, lol.
Actually, since it is Avery, I hope Gary" The Weasel" gives his 10 games and a huge fine. Couldn't happen to a nicer rat! Live by the sword... Avery is an idiot, his fans and supporters deserve him; no matter what Cuthbert, Phaneuf, Pronger, or anybody else has done or said. This moron chose to do this, as he has so mamny stupidities, so many times. So pay the fiddler, idiot!!!
