Day in the Life...

The NHL Network has a show entitled "Day in the Life," which follows a player around from morning to night on the day of a game. Most episodes are pretty cool, and show a player at home with his family, eating (creepy, I know), going to morning skate, going to lunch, interacting with fans, taking a 2-hour nap (they don't show that), then playing in the game.

The Shea Weber episode was boring. I think he lives with his parents - I could be wrong there. For the most part, that episode was them sitting in meetings and Nashville Predators' coach Barry Trotz warning the team that Zach Parise is a good player. (Uh, yeah, he is.)

The Ryan Clowe episode also was boring, because they were on the road in Columbus so we saw nice shots of him eating eggs in the hotel (he also eats oatmeal sometimes). Clowe also has the personality of a pineapple.

Right now, I'm watching Derek Morris. I know that it sucks that Petr Prucha was traded for this guy, who is going to be an unrestricted free agent in less than 4 months, but he is a good player. He also has a big, big, big shot from the point. (His oldest son also has a huge slapper... I think the kid is like 8). He's got a good personality and he seems like he cares about winning. Ah, if only Don Maloney was stupid enough to take Aaron Voros instead of Prucha.

Anyway, point of the story is 1) I think Morris will really help this team and 2) to tell you to TiVo this show. They show random episodes at random times. I know Mike Green is sometime this week.

Oh, and Scott Hartnell's wife is really hot.

  1. I remember watching that and thinking how weird it was that Derek Morris was on the Coyotes when it filmed, but was on the Rangers when it aired. Those shows are fun, though. Seeing Doug Weight in that mansion of his made me like him more; the same can be said for the departed Bill Guerin.

Did you happen to catch Voices: Kenny Albert? I wonder if they mentioned his background as interviewer for old-school ECW.

  2. Just discovered your blog today and, ironically, just discovered "Day in the life" last week. I DVR'd 4 episodes and loves almost all of them. Hartnell, Green and Morris were great. Weber not so much. The Morris episode really makes you realize that these guys are just like us. They have lives and families. They're not just characters on tv. And when they're traded across the country and have no idea when they'll see their kids again, it's got to kill them.

Anyway, great job on the blog. I think I'll become a regular visitor.

  3. Thanks for the words, Andy... And I've been thinking about the Morris one since I saw it. He obviously won't re-sign in Phoenix since he asked for a trade, but what's his family going to do? They have a real nice place and seem to be ingrained in Arizona, so either he signs somewhere and doesn't see his family for months at a time, or he packs up and moves them (which is why Shanny only wanted to sign in NY or NJ).

It's a tough life, for sure, but fame and millions help out. (As for the minor league guys and the lower paid players, well, that's a different story.)

  4. This is going to date me a bit, but I remember when Ron Hextall was part of the Eric Lindros trade and he was upset about having to pull his kids out of school and put them into a new country where they didn't speak the language, as they speak French in Quebec. And when he was traded to the Islanders the following year, he didn't want to go because he didn't want to undo everything he'd just done. It's part of the business, but it sucks.

I agree with Zach, it's a million times harder on the fringe guys, the players who bounce between the AHL and NHL and are always at risk of being waived or traded. They go through even more stress with their families for a fraction of what Derek Morris will sign for on July 1. I read that something like 60% of hockey marriages end in divorce, and it's no real mystery why.
